GTA 6's release could still be delayed despite preorders already being open. A former Rockstar developer says the studio is willing to postpone the game if it doesn't meet its own quality standards, according to Notebookcheck.

Former Rockstar developer Adam York, who worked at the studio from 2012 to 2019 and contributed animation work to GTA 5, said that if critical bugs are discovered during the final testing phase or if the team believes the game's final missions require additional polishing, management would have no hesitation in delaying the release by another six months.

According to York, Rockstar's exceptionally loyal fan base means the company has little reason to worry about preorders declining because of another delay.

Investor confidence and trailer rumors

Despite the former developer's warning, investors and the market remain confident that the current release schedule will hold.

Here's what we know:

  • Management's stance: Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has repeatedly reassured investors that the planned release date remains unchanged.
  • Expectations for new reveals: Insiders and analysts are closely watching the publisher's upcoming financial reports, as Rockstar has historically used these periods to release new trailers or make major announcements.
  • Market predictions: Betting markets still assign only moderate odds to another delay, although many fans are beginning to run out of patience.

No more crunch

Another key factor affecting development is Rockstar's new approach to working conditions. The studio was previously criticized for relying on mandatory overtime during the development of major releases.

The company now says it has abandoned that practice. As a result, developing and polishing the game takes longer, but it also provides a healthier and more sustainable environment for the team.
