On Saturday, April 12, an intruder broke into Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence and set a fire, forcing the governor, his family, and guests to evacuate urgently, reports AP News.

According to police, the suspect scaled a nearly 7-foot fence late at night, bypassed security, and broke into the mansion, where he ignited a fire using a homemade incendiary device.

The blaze caused significant damage to the southern wing, shattering windows, scorching walls, and destroying furniture, including a piano.

The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Cody Balmer of Harrisburg, was arrested hours later. He now faces charges of attempted murder, terrorism, arson, and aggravated assault.

Lieutenant George Bivens stated that Balmer had carefully planned the attack: "He was inside for about a minute, but it was enough to cause serious damage."

Governor Shapiro’s response and federal support

Governor Shapiro spoke out firmly after the attack, declaring he would not be deterred by violence or hate:

"If the intent was to stop me from doing my job, I’ll just work even harder," he said. "I refuse to be held captive by the evil someone tried to impose on us last night."

He explained the fire started in the same room where his family had celebrated Passover just hours earlier: "We were awakened at 2 a.m. by state troopers. Thankfully, we all got out safely."

Federal agencies, including the Department of Justice, FBI, and US Attorney’s Office, have pledged their assistance in the investigation.

Forensics teams are examining the scene, including the section of the fence that was breached.

Shapiro also thanked fellow governors, Vice President JD Vance, and others for their support.
