We are used to trusting only numbers, facts, and expert advice, while ignoring the quiet signals of our own bodies. However, psychologists are convinced that intuition is not mysticism, but a real tool for processing experience.

How to learn to listen to yourself, recognize brain signals in alpha waves, and why your inner voice can be more accurate than any analysis was explained by psychology of entrepreneurship expert, businessman, and scientist Kostiantyn Kruрlov.

What is intuition: experience or something more?

In the scientific community, intuition is often called “compressed experience.” But can everything be explained only by accumulated knowledge? Kostiantyn Kruglov offers a broader view of this phenomenon:

“Psychologists often describe intuition as the result of thousands of micro-observations and accumulated practical experience. Thanks to this, we instantly recognize familiar situations and make decisions quickly. However, I believe intuition is something deeper than just the ability to analyze quickly.”

True intuition does not arise from emotions or experience, but from a person’s connection with their inner world. In other words, it is not a premonition, but our ability to read the objective structure of reality.

Most people ignore their inner voice when it suggests inconvenient decisions or contradicts common sense.

“Fortunately, intuition is a skill that can be developed. Its development is linked to inner discipline, the ability to listen to oneself, and observing one’s own reactions. When you learn to distinguish intuition from emotions, you will be able to make better decisions faster. Intuition will stop being magic and become a useful tool,” the expert added.

How to recognize intuition: key signs

Modern psychology identifies specific markers that help understand when it is intuition speaking to you:

Suddenness. A decision or insight appears like a flash, without logical explanation. You understand what to do even though you don’t know why — and you are 100% confident in your decision.

Physical signals (or premonition). Suddenly, you may feel bodily tension, a sinking feeling in the stomach, or complete calm. In moments of danger, many people feel goosebumps on the back of the neck. Sometimes there is an unexplained urge to avoid a certain place, only to later learn there was an accident there.

Discomfort in relationships. Intuition about relationship changes may appear as inner discomfort during communication with a partner or a feeling of distrust.

Internal safety system

Sometimes ignoring a weak premonition can be very costly.

“Most people ignore these signals because they are used to acting rationally. But our intuition works as an internal safety system, so even a weak, bad feeling can save your life or relationships if you listen to it,” the scientist emphasizes.

In practice, every driver likely has a story of suddenly slowing down and narrowly avoiding an accident. This is how intuition works for pedestrians or soldiers who, without a clear reason, change their route and avoid danger.

“If you feel that something is wrong in a relationship, listen to yourself. Try to understand what your inner ‘self’ is trying to say,” the expert advises.

How to ‘activate’ intuition: the power of alpha waves

A person’s level of intuition cannot be measured with psychological tests. However, the general scientific view is that intuition is not a fixed trait — it is formed through practice and experience, and most importantly, it can be developed. Intuitive thoughts or insights most often occur when the brain operates in alpha-wave mode.

Scientists have found that the best insights happen when the brain operates at a frequency of 8–12 Hz (alpha rhythms). This is a state of deep calm and relaxation.

How to stimulate this state

In addition to the ability to hear your inner voice, alpha waves help reduce stress and enhance creativity. Alpha activity is stimulated by meditation and breathing exercises, warm baths, and calm music. You can also reconnect with yourself during solitary walks in nature.

If this is not possible, you should create a calm environment at home. Remove all informational noise that prevents focus on your inner self — social media, television, and radio.

Intuition vs Fear: how not to make a mistake

The most difficult part is distinguishing a genuine inner signal from ordinary anxiety. Unfortunately, intuition does not speak in words but in sensations. Therefore, to understand what it is telling you, some effort is required.

Pay attention to the first feeling. Psychologists explain it as fast thinking, when the brain processes experience in a split second and produces a signal.

It can be a ''yes'' — a calm sense that you are doing the right thing. Or an inner resistance in the form of a “no.” Often, the body reacts before thoughts arise, through tension or relaxation.

Engage logic. The first feeling is a “raw” intuitive signal that must be balanced with rational thinking. Intuition gives direction, while logic should verify and clarify the decision.

You can ask yourself: “What evidence supports my feeling?” or “What could go wrong if I am mistaken?” This helps avoid impulsive decisions.

If intuition and logic lead to the same conclusion, it is a signal to act. If you are unsure, it is better to test your intuition in practice by taking a cautious step in the direction it suggests.

The expert offers a simple test:

“It is important not to confuse intuitive signals with your own emotions. To distinguish intuition from fear within 30 seconds, you need to pause and analyze your feelings. Intuition is a soft and short signal of ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Fear triggers anxious thoughts and scenarios like ‘what if…’. If your feeling has no explanation, it is intuition. If you are simply overthinking, it is fear. Ask yourself: ‘Do I feel calm or anxious?’ The answer often clarifies everything,” explains Kostiantyn Kruhlov.

Smart balance: when to trust the ‘sixth sense’

In 2016, the journal Psychological Science published the results of an experiment titled “The Science of Intuition.” First, participants were given tasks without time to think, forcing them to make quick decisions. Later, they were given plenty of time to complete the same tasks.

It turned out that in the first case, when participants acted intuitively, they made more correct decisions than when they analyzed the tasks for a long time. At the same time, their confidence in their answers was higher, even when they could not clearly explain their choices.

“Intuition is a useful tool, but not an absolute truth. It should be treated more as a ‘signal for verification’ rather than the main source of decisions. I recommend combining it with analytical thinking. The ideal approach is when they work together,” concludes Kostiantyn Kruhlov.
