Germany is ready to purchase Patriot air defense systems from the United States in order to transfer them to Ukraine, stated German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, The Guardian reports.

"The Americans need some of them themselves, but they also have a lot of them. ... It has not yet been finalised whether a delivery will be made," Merz said.

Speaking at a briefing on the sidelines of the Ukraine Recovery Conference, the German Chancellor also reiterated his view that Germany’s and Europe’s interests in growth, a free market economy, energy security, and political freedom are directly tied to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

"Germany’s future is very closely linked to Ukraine’s future in this way," he said.

Patriot for Ukraine

Earlier, the German outlet Bild reported that the German government is planning to sign a deal with the United States to purchase Patriot air defense systems on behalf of Ukraine.

According to the report, Berlin is awaiting a US commitment to transfer two Patriot missile systems to Germany, which would be funded by the German government.

The problem is that Ukraine had previously tried to buy Patriot systems directly from the US but was unsuccessful. Following that, Kyiv turned to Germany for assistance.
