Germany backs EU sanctions against Nord Stream pipelines

The German government supports the EU's plans to impose sanctions on Russia's Nord Stream gas pipelines running through the Baltic Sea, stated Government spokesperson Stean Cornelius, according to Tagesschau.
"The German government supports the provisions related to the Nord Stream pipelines," Cornelius stated.
His remarks came in response to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s call for tougher sanctions on Russia aimed at pushing it toward peace negotiations with Ukraine.
"It is, of course, also important that the United States supports any potential sanctions package," the spokesperson added.
EU sanctions against Nord Stream
Recently, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU intends to increase pressure on Moscow until Russian leader Vladimir Putin is ready for peace talks with Ukraine. This statement came after Putin did not come to Türkiye to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on May 15.
According to her, the new package of sanctions against Russia will include sanctions on Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2.
