German police detain suspects planning terrorist attack on Cologne Cathedral
On Sunday, December 31, German police detained three people who allegedly planned to commit a terrorist attack in Cologne Cathedral on New Year's Eve, reports Reuters.
The Cologne police reported that the suspects in the attack on the Cologne Cathedral planned to use a car. The method of attack is unknown, but police searched the underground parking lot under the cathedral with sniffer dogs.
"The three people are now securely in custody, which we are very glad about since they can no longer communicate with each other," Cologne police director Frank Wissbaum said.
The suspects in the Cologne Cathedral attack were detained in three cities in western Germany. Communication devices were seized during searches of their apartments.
Threat of terrorist attacks in Europe
Earlier it became known that Islamists were preparing several attacks in European cities. The target could be Christmas church services. The police arrested several people.
