Early Sunday morning, October 4, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit. He is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to Deutsche Welle.

"I came to Kyiv today because Ukraine needs our support in the coming weeks. If Russia is not stopped, its war machine will sooner or later turn against us," Merz says at the train station after his arrival.

He also notes that Ukrainians will soon face their fifth winter of war. In particular, Russia continues to bomb cities, residential buildings, and thermal power plants. At the same time, the Chancellor emphasizes that Ukrainians cannot be broken.

In addition, the German official announces a meeting with Zelenskyy and says he will assure him of continued support.

"Our partnership is a two-way street. German and Ukrainian companies are jointly developing technologies that benefit both countries. This makes us more secure and stronger," he concludes.

This is Merz's first visit to Ukraine since May 2025. Upon arrival, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met him.

What else important to know

A few weeks ago, Merz stated that Europe faced decisive weeks and months in defending the freedom and peace of our continent against Russia. He emphasized that Europe's security must be at the center of political action, and that Ukraine needed even more assistance in the war started by Russia.

Following the meeting between the foreign ministers of Germany and Russia, Merz stated that Russia was not interested in participating in genuine peace talks. Against this backdrop, he pledged to continue supporting Ukraine.
