General Staff sums up results of five-month operation of Ukraine's Forces in Kursk region
The Ukrainian Armed Forces have been conducting an operation in the Kursk region for five months. This is forcing the Russian army to deploy significant forces in this direction, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to the General Staff, over the five months since the start of the Kursk operation, the enemy's total losses in this direction have amounted to more than 38,000, with around 15,000 killed.
They also reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces' operation began on August 6, 2024, and became another phase in the fight against Russian aggression. For the first time in 11 years of the war, combat operations were moved to Russian territory.
The main goal of the operation was to prevent the enemy's advance in the Sumy region and to create a buffer zone. It also forced the Russian army to redirect significant resources to the Kursk region, weakening their positions on other fronts.
"Russia was forced to urgently request help from North Korea, which sent nearly 12,000 of its soldiers to Russia. Around 4,000 of them have already been eliminated, and some units have lost combat capability," the General Staff reminded.
Ukrainian forces destroyed:
- 104 tanks;
- 575 armored combat vehicles;
- 1,104 units of automotive equipment;
- 330 artillery systems;
- 12 multiple rocket launchers (MRL);
- 12 air defense systems;
- 1 aircraft;
- 3 helicopters;
- 859 drones;
- 32 units of special equipment.
During the operation, Ukrainian forces captured 860 Russian soldiers, significantly replenishing the exchange fund. This allowed for the return of hundreds of Ukrainian defenders who had been held in Russian prisons.
Operation in the Kursk region
The operation aimed to weaken the enemy's combat capabilities and force it to redirect resources to defend its own territories. Strikes on military targets in Russia's border regions also increase pressure on the Kremlin, demonstrating the vulnerability of its rear positions and its inability to protect its own infrastructure.
Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that Russia lost up to a battalion of North Korean soldiers in the Kursk region over two days.
