Future Siri: Expectations from Apple's voice assistant in 2025
Apple has started to expand Siri capabilities with Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18.1 and iOS 18.2, but additional Siri updates are expected in 2025, reports MacRumors.
New features in iOS 18
Personal context
With Personal Context, Siri will keep track of your emails, messages, files, photos, and other information. If the data is on your device, Siri will know where it is and where it came from.
Using this information, Siri will be able to better find what you need - whether it's a ticket number in an email you received, a file you downloaded, or a photo sent by a friend.
Siri will also learn to understand your habits and preferences to help you complete tasks faster and manage your device more efficiently.
On-screen context
Siri will understand what's on your screen and take it into account when you ask it to do things. For example, if you receive an address in a message, you can tell Siri to “Add this to your contacts,” and it will understand that you are referring to the address on your screen.
The on-screen context feature will allow Siri to perform actions related to the information displayed on your device.
In iOS 18.2, it is already possible to send screenshots to ChatGPT, and it can perform some similar functions. However, Apple has emphasized that integration with ChatGPT is not the same as the upcoming screen context feature in Siri.
App integration
Siri will get deeper app integration, enabling it to perform hundreds of new actions in both Apple and third-party apps.
Apple gives the following examples:
- Show articles from a reading list in Safari
- Send photos from a specific event
In addition, Siri will be able to execute multi-step commands. For example, she can edit a photo you took and immediately send it to another user with a single command.
Features that may appear in iOS 19
All of the features listed above belong to iOS 18 and will be added in future updates of this version. However, Apple is working on the next generation of Siri, which is planned to be implemented in iOS 19.
Siri in iOS 19 will be based on large language models (LLMs). These models are used in services such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude.
Thanks to LLM, Siri will be able to conduct long dialogues, making communication more natural and similar to a conversation with a person. It will also be able to perform more complex tasks and better compete with ChatGPT.
Apple plans to replace the current version of Siri with the LLM version in the future. It is expected that the new Siri will be announced in iOS 19, but the functionality itself may appear only in the update scheduled for 2026 - just as some Apple Intelligence features appear gradually in iOS 18 updates.
More information about the new features of iOS 19 will be presented in June at the WWDC conference. Some of the new Siri features may be available as early as September 2025, when iOS 19 is to be launched.
When can we expect new Siri features
The Siri features planned for iOS 18 are expected to be released in the iOS 18.4 update, which is expected to be released in April. Before that, Apple will release iOS 18.3 at the end of January, after which iOS 18.4 beta testing will begin and last for several months.
The features of iOS 19 will be announced in June at WWDC, and the update itself will be released in September. However, all new features may be rolled out gradually, with further iOS 19 updates throughout 2025 and 2026.
