About the RDK
The Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK) is a military unit within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, formed by Russian nationals in August 2022 to defend Ukraine against the Russian invasion. It is part of the International Legion of Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces.
RDK fighters participate in operations on the Avdiivka, Zaporizhzhia, and Lyman fronts, as well as in border regions inside Russia.
Recruitment for the corps includes Russian prisoners of war and former Russian servicemen who joined the legion, as well as ethnic Russian emigrants living in Ukraine and other European countries.
In November 2022, the Civil Council, consisting of public figures from nine Russian regions, announced the recruitment of volunteers into national units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including the RDK.
In summer 2022, the RDK was attached to the 1st Company of the 98th Territorial Defense Battalion Azov on the Zaporizhzhia-Donetsk front.
For example, on January 24, 2023, RDK fighters, as part of a special unit of Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate, conducted a nighttime raid on the banks of Nova Kakhovka. During the operation, they destroyed at least 12 Russian occupiers, a BTR-82A armored vehicle, and captured one prisoner. The group returned safely to the right bank of the Dnipro after completing their mission.
This raid provided intelligence with detailed information on the number, composition, and positions of enemy reserves.
RDK fighters are also known for their cross-border raids into Russian regions. In June 2023, Russian volunteers attacked Belgorod Oblast, including the town of Shebekino.
