Freight train derailed near Belgorod, Russia
A freight train derailed in Russia's Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, due to external interference with the operation of railway transport, according to the South-Eastern Railway.
"Due to the interference of unauthorized individuals in the operation of railway transport, at 11:17 PM on September 10, 11 empty railcars and the locomotive of a freight train derailed," the statement read.
The train was sabotaged on the Volokonovka – Novy Oskol section in the Belgorod region. Restoration work is ongoing on the railway track and contact network. Train movement along this section has been temporarily suspended.
As a result of the sabotage, several passenger services have been canceled. Reportedly, bus transportation has been organized for the affected passengers.
Railway sabotage
Sabotage on Russian railways in the occupied territories of Ukraine has been a common occurrence since the start of the war.
According to British intelligence, anti-war activists continue to target Russian railways, posing a significant challenge to the Russian authorities. Russia’s military logistics, including supply chains for the war in Ukraine, still heavily depend on the country’s 33,000-kilometer railway network.
In May, a drone attacked a freight train in Russia's Volgograd region, which was carrying fuel in tankers. Several railcars derailed, causing an explosion and fire. The incident was officially attributed to the interference of unauthorized individuals.
