The second half of May 2026 is preparing yet another test of endurance for Earth’s inhabitants. The Sun continues its active cycle, which will trigger a new wave of geomagnetic fluctuations.

RBC-Ukraine, with reference to the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), shares a detailed forecast of magnetic storms for May 15–18, along with practical advice on how to support the body during this period.

Magnetic storm calendar: detailed forecast for May 15–18

According to the latest monitoring data, solar activity will remain at high levels, causing a prolonged period of geomagnetic disturbance:

May 15. Start of the storm. The intensity will reach level 5 (red level). This creates a serious load on blood vessels in the morning. There is a high probability of migraine attacks and general emotional instability.

May 16. Sustained peak. Activity remains critical at level 5. The body, already tired from the previous day, may respond with blood pressure spikes and sleep disturbances.

May 17. Maximum intensity. Although the index slightly stabilizes, the storm remains at level 5. This is a “day of accumulated fatigue,” when weather-sensitive people may experience strong body aches and apathy.

May 18. Gradual decline. Disturbance levels will drop to level 4. This is still a “yellow alert” level. The magnetosphere will begin to calm, but the risk of headaches and fatigue will persist until evening.

What is a magnetic storm

When powerful solar flares occur on the Sun, a large amount of solar wind is released into space. When these charged particles reach Earth, they interact with the planet’s magnetic field, causing fluctuations. These “micro-shocks” of the magnetosphere are believed to affect human cells, altering metabolic processes and nerve sensitivity.

Who is at highest risk?

A red-level (5-point) geomagnetic storm expected on May 17 poses a risk to:

  • Weather-sensitive and meteorologically dependent people
  • Patients with hypertension and ischemic heart disease
  • People prone to migraine attacks
  • Elderly individuals whose bodies adapt less efficiently to external changes
  • Those suffering from sleep disorders or depressive conditions

Most common symptoms during these days

Since the storm will last 4 consecutive days (three of them at red level), symptoms may intensify:

Head: dull pain, “band-like” pressure sensation, pulsation in the temples.
Heart: increased heartbeat or “skipping beats,” shortness of breath.
Emotions: sudden anger, tearfulness, anxiety.
Joints: pain in knees and elbows, as if “before weather changes.”
Gastrointestinal system: nausea and loss of appetite.

How to protect yourself: expert advice

To ensure the March storm passes without serious consequences, doctors recommend following these rules:

  • Avoid stimulants. Forget coffee, energy drinks, and strong tea. They cause blood vessel spasms, which are already stressed during storms.
  • Hydration. Increase water intake to 1.5–2 liters. This helps keep blood less viscous and reduces the risk of clot formation.
  • Temperature control. Avoid hot baths and saunas. Instead, a moderate contrast shower helps maintain vascular tone.
  • Light diet. Avoid fatty, spicy, and overly salty foods. Excess salt retains water, which increases blood pressure.
  • More oxygen. If you feel well, spend the evening outdoors. Oxygen is a natural antidote to solar activity.
