American leader Donald Trump has promised good news regarding a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine, saying he is speaking about it for the first time.

The US president made the remarks during a conversation at the White House.

"I think we're doing very well with Ukraine and Russia. For the first time I'm saying that... I think we're maybe going to have some good news," Trump stated.

Donald Trump also commented on personnel losses in the Russia-Ukraine war, stating that the United States is witnessing 25,000 deaths per month, with 31,000 reported last month, referring to young soldiers who had families.

He further emphasized that, unlike his predecessor Joe Biden, the United States is not spending its own money on the war in Ukraine. Instead, he claimed, Europe is effectively paying America, apparently referring to the PURL program under which Ukraine’s partners pay the US for military aid. Trump contrasted this with Biden’s approach, noting that under his administration Europe contributes while the US does not bear the full cost.

Peace talks

On the diplomatic front, the Ukrainian delegation traveled to Abu Dhabi for another round of negotiations with Russia and the United States on a peace settlement, scheduled for February 4–5. A previous round of talks in the UAE on January 23–24 marked the first trilateral meetings between Ukraine, Russia, and the US, though the parties did not publicly disclose the outcomes.

According to sources, there was progress on military issues, including potential force withdrawals, ceasefire monitoring mechanisms, and the establishment of a coordination center. However, the territorial question remains unresolved: Russia insists on troop withdrawals from Donbas, while Kyiv continues to hold its position.
