Fats are a crucial component that can either tip the scales or tip your health out of balance without them. Finding the golden mean in this matter lies in consuming the right fats, in the right proportions, and in the right amounts, according to nutrition expert Natalia Matishynets.

What to eat

The right fats are as essential to our bodies as any other micronutrients.

First and foremost, they support heart and brain health, enhance the absorption of vital vitamins and antioxidants, and even help reduce the risk of certain diseases.

Foods that contain good fats:

  • Nuts
  • Avocado
  • Seeds
  • Fish
  • Seafood
  • Olives and olive oil
  • Seaweed

The expert advises not to forget to sensibly combine these products on your plate to provide your body with all the necessary fatty acids and micronutrients.

Importancy of fats

A moderate amount of fat is a vital part of a healthy balanced diet. It's a source of essential fatty acids that the body cannot produce on its own.

Fat helps the body absorb vitamins A, D, and E. These are fat-soluble vitamins, meaning they can only be absorbed with the help of fats.

Fats play a significant role in building skin cells, blood vessels, and nerve endings. By consuming fats correctly, you ensure healthy and elastic skin, a strong heart, and a robust nervous system.

Beneficial unsaturated fats serve as the building blocks for numerous hormones in our bodies, including those responsible for reproductive function, as well as corticosteroid hormones.

The highest levels of saturated fats are found in processed meats, such as sausages, bacon, and burgers. As well as in hard cheeses, whole milk and cream, whipped cream, lard, palm oil, and coconut oil.

Consuming too much saturated fat can increase cholesterol levels in the blood.
