Buns are famous worldwide for their versatility – they can stand in for bread, accompany various dishes, serve as sandwich bases, or simply be enjoyed on their own. What is even better is that there is a recipe requiring just a handful of ingredients no oven, according to Cookist.

Ingredients for pan buns:

  • 1 cup (235 ml) milk
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup (245 ml) water
  • 600 g flour
  • 50 g oil
  • 10 g dry yeast
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil (or regular)
  • 1 clove garlic
  • Any herbs of your choice

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, mix milk, water, sugar, yeast, and oil. Add salt and gradually incorporate the flour. Combine all ingredients to form a homogeneous dough. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 1 hour to allow the dough to rise.

2. Divide the dough into 16 portions. Shape each portion into balls and let them rise for 30 minutes.

3. Gently flatten the balls and fry them on a heated pan. Mix the oil with garlic and herbs, then brush each bun with this mixture.

Bun-making tips:

  • For texture and flavor, sprinkle coarse sea salt over the buns after brushing them with oil.
  • Opt for high-protein bread flour for better texture and taste.
  • Use a pan with a thick bottom to help the buns bake better and evenly inside.
  • The thickness of the buns determines their texture; thinner ones will be crispier, while thicker ones will be more airy.
  • Store the buns in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • These buns can also be frozen in resealable bags or airtight containers for up to 2 months. Thaw slightly and reheat in the microwave. Brush with oil and herbs before serving.
