Five EU countries to strengthen control over compliance with sanctions against Russia
Five European Union countries signed an agreement in Vilnius to strengthen the monitoring of sanctions against the Russian Federation, according to Yle.
According to the publication, the Finnish customs announced the signing of the agreement. The agreement will strengthen and unify the EU's control over compliance with visa requirements for Russia.
Besides Finland, the agreement was signed by:
- Estonia;
- The agreement was signed by Lithuania;
- Latvia;
- Poland.
The document from Finland was signed by the head of customs Sami Rakshit.
"By signing the agreement today (May 9 - ed.), we want to show other countries and companies the importance of close cooperation for effective sanctions control and contribute to the effectiveness of sanctions," Rakshit said.
Sanctions against Russia
So far, 13 sanctions packages have been imposed on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, the Kremlin sometimes manages to circumvent the restrictions.
In April, European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis confirmed the start of preparations for the next package of sanctions restrictions. Meanwhile, Politico reported that the EU may impose sanctions on Russian liquefied natural gas.
