American President Donald Trump congratulated Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on his election as Pope. The newly elected pontiff became the first American to occupy the throne of St. Peter, The Telegraph reports.

Trump reacted with joy to the election of Robert Prevost as the first American Pope.

"Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope," Trump wrote on his Truth Social.

He emphasized that it was a great honor for the whole country.

"I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!" Trump stated.

Election of the New Pope

On May 7, cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church began a conclave to elect a new Pope. The first attempt to elect a new pontiff failed, but today the cardinals successfully elected the new Pope, with white smoke rising over the Sistine Chapel.

The new Pope is Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who will take the papal name Leo XIV. As mentioned earlier, he becomes the first American Pope in history.
