Finnish police investigate foreign ship's involvement in power cable outage
Yesterday, it was reported that the underwater electrical cable Estlink 2, which connects Finland and Estonia, had been damaged. Police are investigating the possible involvement of a foreign ship in the incident, reports Reuters.
On Thursday, Finnish police said they were investigating and checking whether a foreign ship was involved in damaging the underwater power cable. However, the name of the ship has not been disclosed.
The agency notes that Baltic Sea countries are on heightened alert for possible sabotage acts following a series of disruptions to power cables, telecommunications lines, and gas pipelines since 2022.
According to operator Fingrid, the Estlink 2 connection, with a capacity of 658 megawatts (MW), remains offline after an outage that began around noon local time on Wednesday. Currently, only the Estlink 1 line, with a capacity of 358 MW, is in operation between the two countries.
"The police, in cooperation with the Border Guard and other authorities, are investigating the chain of events of the incident," Finnish police said in a statement.
