Finland to open two border crossings with Russia
The Finnish government has decided to open two checkpoints on the border with Russia. Since the end of November, the entire border has remained closed, according to Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo on Yle.
According to the head of government, Finland will reopen the Vaalima and Niirala checkpoints.
Orpo clarifies that the decision is made unanimously, but reminds that the government could quickly return the blockade if the problem with refugees resumes after the opening of the border.
At the same time, Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen says that the government's decision will be valid until January 14, 2024.
Border Guard Service spokesperson Mikko Lehmus says in a comment to reporters that these border crossing points were opened so that people living on both sides of the border could visit their relatives.
The decision to close the entire border will expire on the night of Wednesday to Thursday (December 13-14).
What preceded it
On November 30, Finland decided to close all checkpoints on the border with Russia. This happened against the backdrop of a huge number of illegal migrants who wanted to enter Finland from the territory of the Russian Federation.
Just a few days ago, Petteri Orpo said that the authorities were closely monitoring the situation at the border and could extend the closure.
