The FBI will lead the investigation into the assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to the Associated Press.

The Bureau states that it will collaborate with the Secret Service, as well as local and state law enforcement agencies.

According to US Attorney General Merrick Garland, the investigation is also being conducted by the ATF, the Western District of Pennsylvania Prosecutor's Office, and the Department of Justice's National Security Division.

What is known about the assassination attempt on Trump

In Pennsylvania, on July 13, during a rally for US presidential candidate Donald Trump, an attempt on his life occurred.

After what sounded like gunshots, Trump touched his ear and then sat down on the ground, with visible blood on his face. The US Secret Service swiftly removed Trump from the stage and evacuated him to a medical facility.

Hours later, on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump disclosed that he sustained a gunshot wound to the upper part of his right ear. His representatives assured the public that he was fine and not in any life-threatening condition.

According to several US media reports, the shooter, presumably positioned on a rooftop outside the rally venue, was fatally shot by Secret Service agents.

Additionally, there was one confirmed fatality at the rally, likely from the shooter's gunfire, and reports of another person critically injured.

The current President of the US Joe Biden has stated that there is no place for such violence in the US and called on the entire country to condemn this act. At the same time, he noted that he cannot yet classify the shooting at Trump's rally as an assassination attempt.

He mentioned being relieved to hear that Trump is safe. Subsequently, the White House confirmed that President Biden had a conversation with Donald Trump, but no details of the conversation were disclosed.
