FBI abruptly shifts course, begins working with Russia and China — Reuters

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation is expanding its cooperation with law enforcement agencies in China and Russia. The FBI says this is necessary to combat crime, but it is causing concern among former US intelligence officials, according to Reuters.
FBI launched new format for cooperation
Kash Patel, Director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, stated that over the past year, the FBI has established new contacts with law enforcement agencies in China and Russia. According to him, the cooperation is limited to specific areas of the fight against international crime.
Specifically, it involves combating the illicit trafficking of fentanyl, cyberfraud, and child sexual exploitation networks.
How cooperation works
According to FBI officials, the cooperation has already gone beyond the scope of a routine exchange of information.
- Chinese law enforcement officials visited the US
- FBI agents worked in China on joint cases
- The parties exchanged operational intelligence
- Law enforcement agencies conducted joint raids and arrests.
The FBI also reported that Kash Patel visited Beijing in late July. A trip to Russia is already scheduled for October.
Why this causes concern
According to Reuters, this cooperation marks a sharp shift in the US agency’s approach. Former counterintelligence officials fear that such contacts could pose risks to US security.
"China and Russia are our enemies, period. They are actively trying to harm our country physically, economically and militarily," said former FBI Senior Agent Jeff Crocker.
In their view, representatives from China and Russia could use access to US facilities or classified information for their own interests.
"So this is great cover for them," added Jeff Crocker.
What FBI director says
Kash Patel emphasized that cooperation is selective in nature and does not apply to all areas of the intelligence agencies' work.
According to him, cooperation with so-called non-traditional partners is limited to combating specific types of transnational crime. He also stated that a similar approach could be applied to other countries, taking into account the specific circumstances of each nation.
In late 2024, Donald Trump nominated Kash Patel for the position of FBI Director. The US President stated that Patel should reform the bureau and step up the fight against crime.
Subsequently, the Senate committee responsible for the matter endorsed Patel's nomination. This paved the way for a final vote on his appointment.
Following this, the US Senate officially confirmed Kash Patel as FBI Director. He took the helm of the bureau after the confirmation process was completed.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the FBI Director was preparing to visit Russia this fall.
The trip is planned as a continuation of new contacts between US and Russian law enforcement agencies.
