The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has nominated its candidate for chancellor for the first time. At the same time, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) has officially confirmed the candidacy of the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Welt and Spiegel inform.

The Federal Party Conference of the AfD has nominated Alice Weidel as a candidate for chancellor.

“She is the future chancellor,” said AfD co-chairman Tino Chrupalla.

Weidel was elected as a candidate for chancellor by standing up. There was no voting with a vote count.

Alice Weidel is one of the most recognizable faces of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, having achieved considerable credibility through her experience and professional career. She holds a doctorate in economics, which confirms her expertise in finance and economic policy.

Weidel is one of the few women in leadership positions in the AfD, a party that is predominantly male.

SPD officially confirms Scholz's candidacy

For its part, the Social Democratic Party of Germany has officially confirmed that it is nominating Scholz for the federal elections to be held on February 23.
