Ukraine requires security guarantees from the United States, as Russia may violate any peace agreements reached, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said following his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that discussions on security guarantees for Ukraine are progressing, with the European framework "almost finalized on paper." However, he emphasized that the United States must also be part of the deal, as only Washington can provide credible deterrence against future Russian aggression.

"It’s good that we’re discussing security guarantees, the US is not opposed. The European part is almost ready, nearly on paper, covering what European partners can provide," Zelenskyy noted. He added that "Ukraine needs the US because only Trump maintains dialogue with Russia. Our country fears that if a ceasefire happens, Putin might strike again without US guarantees."

Trump's proposal

Following their White House meeting, Trump stated that Ukraine and Russia should "stop where they stand" and "let both sides declare victory." Zelenskyy expressed support for that approach, though Trump avoided commenting on possible territorial concessions from Ukraine.

According to a survey by the Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the Razumkov Center, 60% of Ukrainians believe that regardless of how the current war ends, Russia will attack Ukraine again in the future.
