European Commissioner wants to allocate 100 billion euros for EU defense from Russia's attack
The EU Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, wants to allocate 100 billion euros for defense. This will be a preventive solution in case of a Russian attack, states Politico.
Kubilius wants the next seven-year EU budget to allocate 100 billion euros for defense, as the current seven-year budget of more than 1 trillion euros provides only 10 billion euros for defense.
“We need to be ready for the possibility of Russian aggression. If we fail in Ukraine, then of course, the possibility of Russian military aggression against the EU member states can increase,” he said.
The EU Commissioner emphasized that the enemy of the EU is Russian leader Vladimir Putin. He also noted that providing Ukraine with the support it needs to win the war is key.
Kubilius is the first EU Commissioner for Defense and Space. The position was created to better integrate the bloc's fragmented defense industry, increase spending, send more weapons to Ukraine, and improve defense coordination with NATO and the United States.
At the end of last month, The Guardian wrote that European countries are strengthening their public preparedness for military threats from Russia.
