European Commission to discuss 13th sanctions package against Russia in coming days
The European Commission will initiate discussions with EU member states on Saturday, February 3, regarding the details of the 13th package of sanctions against Russia, according to Reuters.
It is expected that the new package of restrictive measures will focus on closing more loopholes to circumvent previously imposed sanctions, particularly concerning goods and technologies that could be used on the battlefield.
One source added that some minor sectoral measures such as new import bans were also likely.
What is known about the 13th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation
Earlier reports indicated that the European Union has commenced discussions on a new package of sanctions, which it aims to approve by February 24, 2024.
Possible sanctions were deliberated on January 18 during a meeting of the bloc's ambassadors, where member states debated on the best ways to support Kyiv in the long term. However, reaching an agreement on the 13th package of sanctions by next month may prove challenging, as the previous one required weeks of negotiations, according to Bloomberg.
Politico reported that Russian aluminum products are among the goods that could face an embargo under the EU's 13th sanctions package.
It has also been revealed that Poland and the Baltic countries have put forward new proposals for EU sanctions against Russia. These proposals include a ban on importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) and a prohibition on importing aluminum from Russia.
