The European Union is preparing new rules for Ukrainians who left the country after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, according to Magnus Brunner, European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration.
Protection to be extended until 2028
The European Commission has submitted a proposal to the Council of the EU to extend the Temporary Protection Directive for Ukrainians for another year.
"Today, we are proposing to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians staying in the EU for another year," Magnus Brunner says at a briefing in Brussels.
If the EU Council supports the proposal, the protection will be extended until March 4, 2028.
Who will be exempt
Along with the extension, the European Commission is proposing to impose restrictions on a specific category of men.
"Our proposal provides that temporary protection should not be granted to newly arriving persons who are not allowed to leave Ukraine because of their military obligations under Ukrainian law," the European Commissioner explains.
In other words, men who are prohibited by Ukrainian law from traveling abroad will not be able to obtain temporary protection in the European Union.
Earlier, the Council of Europe called for Ukrainian refugees not to be forced to return home, emphasizing that returning remains dangerous. temporary protection.
Meanwhile, Denmark has proposed revoking residence permits for some Ukrainians. This initiative is part of a broader discussion within the European Union regarding a review of the conditions for refugees’ stay.
