The European Union will respond with tough and appropriate measures following US President Donald Trump's decision to impose 25% tariffs on imports of aluminum and steel from Europe, according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The head of the European Commission expressed regret over the US decision to impose tariffs, noting that tariffs are taxes, which is bad for business and even worse for consumers.

“Unjustified tariffs on the EU will not go unanswered—they will trigger firm and proportionate countermeasures,” she said.

According to her, the EU will act to protect its economic interests. "We will protect our workers, businesses and consumers," Ursula von der Leyen added.

US President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports without any exceptions or exemptions. The decision will come into force on March 4.

The tariffs will apply to all steel and aluminum imports to the United States, including from Canada and Mexico, the two largest foreign suppliers of metals to the country.

Canada has already stated that the US tariffs on steel and aluminum will be completely unjustified and warned that the country's response to this measure will be clear and measured.

For several months, the EU has been working on a set of potential retaliatory measures in the event of Trump's tariffs, although the details of the list have been closely guarded.

The Financial Times reported that the European Union is preparing to strike at Silicon Valley as a possible response if Trump follows through on his threats to impose tariffs on the bloc.
