The European Union will present to member states next week options for sanctions against Israel. The restrictions are planned to be introduced due to human rights violations in the Gaza Strip, according to Euractiv.

According to informed officials, it is expected that the EU diplomatic service will present ambassadors on Wednesday, July 9, with a document containing options and possible measures.

The restrictions may include full or partial suspension of the EU-Israel agreement, sanctions against ministers of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and military personnel, trade measures, an arms supply embargo, or suspension of scientific cooperation.

EU foreign ministers plan to discuss the document with options at a meeting on July 15 in Brussels—this is the last one before the summer break. As noted, this same day also serves as an unofficial deadline for Israel to demonstrate improvement in the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Euractiv also notes that deep divisions within the EU may prevent the adoption of sanctions against Israel.

War between Israel and Hamas

The armed confrontation in the Gaza Strip has been ongoing since October 2023, when Hamas militants attacked Israel. In January 2025, the sides agreed to a ceasefire and began a hostage exchange, but a full truce could not be reached.

In May, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched Operation Gideon's Chariots to take control of the Gaza Strip. However, the EU and the US oppose the continuation of hostilities.

Recently, US President Donald Trump stated that Israel agreed to a 60-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
