EU's Borrell urges China to facilitate peace process in Ukraine, halt exports to Russia
EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell has called on China to facilitate the peace process in Ukraine and stop exporting dual-use goods to Russia, according to the European External Action Service website.
Borrell met today with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Laos as part of the ASEAN ministerial meeting.
The parties discussed relations between the European Union and China. The EU foreign policy chief explained why the bloc considered Russia's war against Ukraine an existential threat to Europe. He also expressed his concern that China's exports of a large number of dual-use goods and products were supporting Russia in building up its military equipment.
Borrell called on China to use its influence on Russia to help end the war and asked for support for the peace process in Ukraine. The diplomat noted that China's joint statement with Brazil of May 2024 was not a move in this direction.
Borrell said that the next peace summit should be held with the participation of Russia, but based on international law, not on the terms of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Ukraine has already begun preparations for the second peace summit. It involves meetings at the level of ministers and advisers to the heads of state.
