EU leaders call for immediate increase in air defense and missile deliveries to Ukraine
The leaders of the European Union have emphasized the need to intensify the transfer of military assistance to Ukraine, including air defense, missiles, and more, according to conclusions from the EU Council on Ukraine.
According to the conclusions, EU leaders supported a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine based on key principles of the peace formula.
The European Council also reviewed the efforts made in providing military assistance to Ukraine.
"To help Ukraine to defend itself effectively against Russia’s aggression, the European Council calls for the urgent stepping up of efforts, in particular on the delivery of air defense systems, ammunition, and missiles, as well as on the provision of necessary training and equipment for Ukrainian brigades," the statement says.
EU leaders also emphasized the importance of intensifying efforts to support and develop Ukraine's defense industry.
The conclusions also clarify that all military aid will be provided "in full respect of the security and defense policy of certain Member States and taking into account the security and defense interests of all Member States."
Delivery of air defense systems
Earlier, Ukraine requested 19 additional air defense systems from Western allies.
As President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy explained, Ukraine needs such systems to protect nuclear power distribution stations that are being attacked by Russian forces.
Also, Ukraine needs Patriot systems to protect Ukrainian cities from enemy ballistic missiles.
