EU hopes to adopt 19th package of sanctions against Russia in September

The European Union will continue to put pressure on Russia, with 18 packages of sanctions already adopted and a 19th planned for next month, says the deputy chief spokesperson of the European Commission, Arianna Podestà, at a briefing. The EU insists that the sanctions are working.
“Europe continues to maintain full pressure on Russia,” she said.
She recalled that the European Union has already adopted 18 packages of sanctions and is currently working on the 19th.
“Hopefully we will be able to adopt it next month, so that's a bit the time frame we have in mind. And, as I said, we know sanctions are working, and we will maintain pressure on Russia,” Podestà concluded.
EU sanctions against Russia
After Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the European Union began imposing sanctions packages against the aggressor country.
They included restrictions on trade and financial transactions, asset freezes, and travel bans for key Russian officials.
Subsequent Western restrictions cut off Russia's access to foreign aircraft and spare parts. As a result, in 2025, Russian aircraft manufacturers were able to deliver only one of the fifteen commercial aircraft they had planned.
The EU recently adopted its 18th package of sanctions against Russia. It includes:
- 22 banks,
- four companies linked to the Russian Direct Investment Fund,
- 26 companies linked to the defense industry and other key sectors of the economy.
EU representatives note that the 18th package is one of the toughest measures applied since the start of the full-scale war and emphasize its importance for further pressure on Russia and limiting its capabilities in strategic sectors.
