The European Union is finalizing preparations for a large-scale support package aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s drone fleet. The package is expected to be worth €6 billion, according to a statement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Details of aid and response to Russian attacks
According to von der Leyen, the decision to allocate funds is being made amid intensifying Russian terror. In particular, she referred to the latest mass drone attack on Ukrainian cities.
"Last night, Russia launched one of its longest and most relentless drone attacks against Ukraine," the European Commission President emphasized.
She added that while the Kremlin ignores diplomatic efforts, the EU will continue strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities and increasing pressure on the aggressor’s economy.
"We are finalising a €6 billion drone support package. And we keep the pressure on Russia’s war economy with ever tougher sanctions," von der Leyen said.
EU aid to Ukraine
Ursula von der Leyen previously stated that Ukraine would receive the first €6 billion defense package for drones within the current quarter.
These funds are part of a larger €90 billion loan, two-thirds of which is intended for defense needs.
It has also been reported that the EU may disburse the first tranche of this loan package as early as next week.
Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing in Brussels regarding the use of frozen Russian assets. In particular, the Netherlands is seeking to revive talks on a mechanism to transfer up to €210 billion in Russian assets to Ukraine to finance its defense in 2026.
