The European Union continues to increase economic pressure on Russia. The new sanctions package focuses on restricting Moscow’s energy revenues and countering the "shadow fleet," according to a post by Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel on X (formerly Twitter).

Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel said the European Union has clarified what will be included in its 19th sanctions package against Russia, which aims to further restrict Russian energy revenues.

He added that the EU will accelerate its phased withdrawal from Russian liquefied natural gas, noting that European countries are "fully committed to turn off the tap on these fossil fuels."

Shadow fleet ban

Van Weel also announced that the new sanctions extend to an additional 117 Russian vessels in the so-called "shadow fleet," bringing the total number of targeted ships to 564, all of which are used to circumvent sanctions and facilitate illicit energy shipments.

Work is already underway on the next set of measures, which Brussels says will continue to increase pressure on Moscow.

Pressure continues

The EU intends to keep cutting off Russia’s revenue streams and reducing its own energy dependency. Officials in Brussels describe the latest package as one of the most stringent ever in the energy sector since the full-scale invasion began.

By contrast, the UK recently issued a special licence allowing cooperation with two German-subordinated subsidiaries of Rosneft that are under sanctions.

Both the United States and the European Union are ramping up sanctions on Russia, leading to declines in industrial output, rising borrowing costs, and further weakening of the Russian economy.
