EU and US to support just peace in Ukraine - Italian Foreign Ministry
Italy, together with its EU partners, will support, along with the United States, a policy that seeks to promote a just peace for Ukraine and to protect its independence, ANSA reports.
Tajani noted that Italy, like other EU countries, will support US policy that will lead to a just peace in Ukraine, not its defeat.
"It does not mean that we are enemies of Russia if we say that Russia must respect international law. We are not at war with Russia, but we defend Ukraine's right to be an independent state," the Italian Foreign Minister emphasized.
He noted that all EU countries will play a role in establishing peace.
"Together with the US, we will support policies that lead to achieving the goal of a just peace, so not a Ukrainian defeat," Tajani said.
The Italian foreign minister also added that Italy acts as a peacemaker and is not an enemy of any country.
These words were a response to the statement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who claimed that Italy, due to its "anti-Russian" position, could not participate in the peace process to end Russia's war against Ukraine.
At the same time, the newspaper writes that Italy has been a strong supporter of Kyiv and has sent significant military aid after the Russian invasion.
Italy's assistance to Ukraine
At the end of 2024, the Italian government supported the extension of the authorization to supply military assistance to Ukraine.
Italy supplies Ukraine with a wide range of weapons and equipment. In particular, Storm Shadow cruise missiles for strikes at a distance of up to 300 km.
There are also reports of deliveries of M109 self-propelled artillery systems, anti-aircraft missiles, Spada and Skyguard systems, PzH-2000 howitzers, and multiple-launch rocket systems.
Italy, together with France, transferred the SAMP/T anti-aircraft missile system, which is capable of shooting down ballistic missiles.
