EU aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 90%

The European Commission has proposed setting a new climate target by 2024. Greenhouse gas emissions are planned to be reduced by 90% compared to 1990 levels, according to the EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra.
As Hoekstra noted, the European Commission has proposed that the EU take a step "in the EU's path to boost competitiveness, strengthen its independence and cut emissions."
"We're doing so by putting forward an amendment to the European Climate Law to reduce emissions by 90% by 2040," the EU Climate Commissioner said.
According to him, this way the EU aims to protect its citizens from dangerous weather events and global warming.
"It's about protecting our economies from economic losses resulting from climate change. To give you one example, Slovenia lost 11% of GDP following its devastating floods," Hoekstra stated.
He clarified that there have already been many similar cases across the European Union.
This target still needs to be approved by both the European Parliament and the Council of the EU.
Rapid rise in global ocean levels
Earlier, researchers found that the global ocean level is rising about twice as fast as it did in the 20th century.
According to 2019 data, the average annual sea level rise is 4.3 millimeters.
