Erdoğan says Trump-Putin summit could be turning point in Ukraine war

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan says the US-Russia summit gives new momentum to ending the war in Ukraine.
Erdoğan wrote that talks in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had given new momentum to efforts to end the Russian-Ukrainian war.
He said Türkiye welcomed the Alaska summit, expressing hope that the new process involving President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy would lay the foundation for a durable peace. Erdoğan added that his country was ready to contribute to achieving it.
Alaska summit and next steps
The meeting between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin in Alaska began yesterday evening and continued late into the night. The main topic was the war in Ukraine, specifically, possible ways to end it.
After several hours of talks, Trump and Putin spoke to the press. They made a series of statements but offered no concrete details. One thing was clear — no ceasefire was reached.
Soon after the summit, Trump gave an interview to Fox News, held talks with Zelenskyy and European leaders, and posted multiple updates on his social media platform Truth Social.
Trump advised Zelenskyy to make a deal with Russia. This could lead to a three-way meeting of the leaders of Ukraine, the US, and Russia. He also said the next steps depend on Zelenskyy.
According to Bloomberg, Trump told Ukrainian and European leaders that Putin still demands the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbas.
At the same time, media reports suggest that Putin is willing to halt military actions in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson in exchange for Donbas. The US side believes the Russian leader is also ready to discuss withdrawing troops from the Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
Trump also said all parties agreed the best way to end the war in Ukraine is to move directly to a peace agreement rather than a ceasefire.
In addition, the media reported that Trump is ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees based on NATO principles, but outside the alliance itself. Details of this proposal remain unclear.
It is confirmed that on Monday, Zelenskyy will travel to Washington to discuss ending the war.
