Electric or manual toothbrush: What truly keeps teeth healthy

Choosing a toothbrush often sparks debate: electric or manual, with extra attachments or as simple as possible.
Ukrainian dentist Iryna Pilkh explained whether the type of toothbrush really makes a difference.
The habit matters more than the brush
According to the dentist, the key factor in dental care is not the model of the toothbrush, but the regularity and proper technique of brushing. If a person brushes consistently and correctly, most toothbrushes will do the job.
“The most important thing is the willingness. It doesn’t really matter whether the toothbrush is electric or manual; what counts is how often and how properly you brush your teeth,” the dentist notes.
Electric or manual?
Iryna Pilkh emphasizes that both electric and manual brushes are perfectly fine. The choice depends primarily on personal preference. Some people find an electric toothbrush more convenient, while others feel they have better control using a manual one.
The dentist shares a personal example from her own family. She uses a manual toothbrush herself, her husband uses an electric one, and their children use different types depending on their mood. Yet all of them have healthy mouths, which is the main indicator of proper dental care.
What to consider when choosing a toothbrush
The dentist warns against using overly hard brushes or aggressive rubber attachments, which can damage gums and enamel, especially if the brushing technique is incorrect.
According to her, the simpler the toothbrush, the better. Simplicity matters: soft or medium bristles, a clear shape, and no unnecessary features often work more effectively than complex designs.
The type of toothbrush is not decisive for dental health. It is far more important to develop the habit of brushing twice a day, doing it carefully, and complementing home care with regular preventive check-ups at the dentist. This approach ensures a healthy smile, whether your toothbrush is electric or manual.
