In winter, cold can cause frequent sleep problems. One simple trick helps the body adjust to nighttime rest and improves sleep quality, according to Daily Express.
What helps sleep better
In winter, air temperature drops, and sometimes sleep problems can arise due to the cold.
Gareth Nye, a biomedical sciences lecturer at the University of Salford, explained that simply keeping your feet warm may be the most effective way to fall asleep faster. It can also help maintain sleep throughout the night.
Warming your feet with socks, a warm foot bath, or a heating pad can help you fall asleep quickly and sleep longer.
A 2018 study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology found that people wearing socks fell asleep about 7.5 minutes faster and slept 32 minutes longer. They also woke up less often compared to those who did not wear socks.
When the feet are warmed, the blood vessels in them dilate. This helps move heat to the extremities, which actually lowers core body temperature - a key signal the body uses to initiate sleep.
Ideal temperature for sleep
Warm feet also calm the body and reduce stress, making it easier to relax. Cold feet when trying to sleep can trick the body into a state of alertness, making it harder to fall asleep.
This happens because when extremities are cold, blood vessels constrict to preserve heat for vital organs. This tricks your body into thinking it needs to stay awake to maintain core temperature.
Wearing socks before bed can improve circulation and help regulate body temperature. Avoid tight or restrictive socks, as they can reduce blood flow.
Try a warm foot bath or wear loose, breathable socks. At the same time, maintain a room temperature of around 16-18°C. This combination helps lower body temperature while providing comfort.
