Before a flight, every detail matters - from choosing a seat in the cabin to what you eat. And while some foods may seem safe, they can actually cause discomfort while traveling.

During a flight, the pressure in the cabin is lower than on the ground. This can affect digestion and cause bloating, heartburn, and other discomfort. In addition, the dry air in the cabin can increase dehydration, so it is important to drink enough water.

What foods should not be eaten before and on the plane

Spicy and salty foods. Spicy foods can irritate the stomach and cause heartburn, especially in low atmospheric pressure conditions.

Carbonated drinks. Carbon dioxide contained in carbonated drinks can cause bloating and flatulence.

Fatty and fried foods. Foods rich in fat are difficult to digest, and digestion is slowed down in high altitude conditions. This can lead to heaviness in the stomach and even nausea.

Coffee and tea. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system and can increase anxiety, especially during turbulence. In addition, it can affect your sleep if the flight is long.

Alcohol. Although pop culture has created a stereotype that alcohol helps you to endure flights, it actually dehydrates the body and can aggravate the symptoms of air sickness.

Legumes and cabbage. These foods are known to cause gas. In combination with the changed cabin pressure, this can aggravate the discomfort.

Raw vegetables and fruits. Although they are healthy, excessive fiber can cause bloating. This is especially true for fruits with a high fructose content, such as apples or grapes.

What is the best thing to eat before a flight

Choose light meals rich in protein and complex carbohydrates that are easy to digest. For example, yogurt, whole grain crackers, or boiled eggs are great choices. Lean meat and fish are also suitable. Ideally, eat a few hours before your flight (several small meals).

Also, drink enough water to avoid dehydration.

Experienced travelers also advise taking ginger with you just in case - it has anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce nausea.
