Earthquake occurred in Italy
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck southern Italy in the Calabria region late on the evening of August 1, reports Reuters.
According to monitoring groups, the earthquake was felt over a wide area. However, there have been no reports of significant damage.
The Italian Fire Brigade stated that they have not received any information about damage or requests for assistance related to the earthquake.
Similarly, no statements about damage or casualties have been made by the Italian Civil Protection Agency.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology of Italy (INGV) reported that the earthquake's epicenter was near the city of Cosenza in the Calabria region, occurring at 21:43 local time.
Italian experts rated the earthquake as magnitude 5.0.
In contrast, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) assessed it as magnitude 4.6, although initially, it was rated 5.3.
Earthquakes are not uncommon in central and southern Italy. For instance, in 2016, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in central Italy resulted in around 300 deaths and the destruction of much of the mountain town of Amatrice.
