Drones attacked Engels again, where oil refinery burned for 5 days: New fire broke out
On the night of January 14, unknown drones once again attacked Engels, Russia, where a fire had been extinguished for 5 days at a refinery following a drone attack. Now, as claimed, a fuel depot is reportedly burning again, according to Russian Telegram channels.
One of the first to report the attack was the SHOT channel. According to residents, who were the sources of the resource, around 4:25 a.m. (Kyiv time), about 4-5 explosions were heard over Engels in the Saratov region. At that moment, air raid sirens sounded in the city, and the air defense system was activated. Afterward, smoke was visible over one of the city's districts. It was initially assumed that a fire had started, and this information was soon confirmed. Relevant videos were also posted on social media.
The Mash channel claims that around 10 explosions were heard as a result of the drone attack. Meanwhile, residents of Engels told Ostorozhno Novosti that after the drone strike, a fire broke out again at the oil depot. According to them, the facility was hit at least twice. However, it is still unclear whether this is the same facility that was attacked on January 8.
Roman Busargin, the governor of Saratov region, confirmed the events. He reported that as a result of the drone attack, there was damage to an industrial facility in the city of Engels. According to him, emergency and operational services are working at the site in an enhanced mode. No information about casualties has been reported.
According to the latest information, explosions are continuing over the city. At the time of publication, at least two more loud sounds were heard. Residents claim that the air defense systems are active. Authorities are urging people to take shelter in a safe place.
It was previously reported by the governor of the region, Busargin, that the open flames at the oil depot in Engels, which had been burning for 5 days, were successfully extinguished. The fire started on the night of January 8, when drones attacked the facility.
However, as with the current incident, Busargin did not specify that it was the local Crystal Plant oil storage facility that was on fire. He referred to it as an industrial facility.
On January 8, the Ukrainian General Staff confirmed the strike and clarified that the Crystal Plant oil storage facility provided fuel to the Engels-2 military airfield. This airfield serves as the base for Russia's strategic aviation, including Tu-95MS and Tu-160 bombers.
