Scientists have found that soda can lead to lower calorie intake and weight loss. When drinking this drink, you should follow certain rules for the best effect, reports BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health.

Details of the study

The researchers analyzed the physiological effects of soda, as it was found to induce a feeling of fullness and gastric motility (moving food around the body), both of which can reduce hunger.

They also found that sparkling water can support weight loss by converting HCO3, a metabolic byproduct, and increasing energy production.

But the effect is so small that it's hard to expect a weight-loss effect from CO2 in soda alone.

So the researchers concluded that soda should not be used as a weight loss tool by itself, but instead should be integrated into a broader healthy lifestyle strategy.

Akira Takahashi, chief medical officer of a neurosurgical hospital in Japan, said that this new report highlights how soda affects weight loss by promoting a feeling of fullness, which can reduce food intake and overall calorie consumption.

The fact that soda burns calories by absorbing CO2 is not enough to make a significant difference.

For example, during hemodialysis, even with continuous CO2 for four hours, only about 9.5 g of glucose is consumed. Therefore, it is extremely difficult to drink soda continuously for such a long time.

"So I think it's unlikely that soda alone can lead to weight loss," Takahashi said.

Effects of soda on the body

According to the researcher, further studies are needed to fully understand the impact of carbonation on weight loss. The carbon dioxide released from the bubbles fills the stomach, stimulating stretch receptors. These receptors then transmit a signal to the brain via the vagus nerve, creating a feeling of fullness.

Soda should be included in an overall healthy lifestyle. Making good nutritional choices and being physically active will have an even greater impact on weight loss.

Weight loss can occur when people engage in increased physical activity, reduce calorie intake, and eat healthier foods that include minimizing ultra-processed, fried, and sugary foods.

Side effects

While the bubbles in soda can make you feel full, there are also consequences of overindulging in such water.

Drinking soda can make people less hungry, so people may skip meals and experience bloating and gas, and may exacerbate reflux problems.

People with chronic bloating, acid reflux, or other stomach conditions should not drink carbonated drinks.

It is important to note that the new study only looks at plain sparkling mineral water and does not include sweetened drinks, as they may be linked to diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.
