Kettlebell swings

Trainer Jarrod Nobbe explained that kettlebell swings are a powerful movement that combines strength training with cardio. They engage the glutes, hamstrings, and lower back - key muscles of the posterior chain - while keeping your heart rate high.

For people over 40, swings help improve posture and provide an intense metabolic effect without the pounding associated with high-intensity plyometrics.

How to perform the exercise:

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and place the kettlebell on the floor in front of you.

  2. Grap the handle with both hands, keeping your back straight.

  3. Hike the kettlebell back between your legs like a football.

  4. Then sharply lift the kettlebell to chest height.

Perform 3-4 sets of 15-20 reps with a rest of 30 to 45 seconds between sets.

Push press

This exercise creates significant body-wide engagement, accelerates calorie burning, and allows you to handle heavier weights without overloading your joints.

How to perform the exercise:

  1. Stand upright with a barbell or dumbbell at shoulder height, elbows slightly in front of the weights.

  2. Brace your core with your feet flat.

  3. Slightly dip by bending your knees.

  4. Press the weights overhead while simultaneously straightening your legs.

  5. Lock the weights overhead, keeping your arms straight and your biceps near your ears.

  6. Lower the weight back to your shoulders in a controlled manner.

Perform 3-4 sets of 8-10 reps with 60-75 seconds of rest between sets.

Wood chops

This exercise dynamically engages your obliques, hips, and shoulders. It also helps improve coordination, balance, and spine health.

How to perform the exercise:

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a cable handle, resistance band, or dumbbell.

  2. Rotate your torso, pulling or swinging the weight diagonally across your body.

  3. Complete the movement at the opposite thigh, keeping your arms straight and engaged.

Perform 3-4 sets of 10-12 reps per side with 30-45 seconds of rest between rounds.
