Dove to unheard depths: Ukrainian swimmer becomes world champion in underwater swimming again
Ukrainian athlete Kateryna Sadurska triumphed at the World Freediving Championship in Kalamata, Greece, setting a new record in monofin diving, citing the official website of the competition.
The eighth planetary championship kicked off along the Mediterranean coast of Greece. The Ukrainian arrived at the tournament after training in optimal conditions, with the surface water temperature currently at just 24 degrees Celsius.
On the first competition day, Sadurska dove with a monofin, achieving the deepest dive of her career and setting an absolute record for Ukraine at 103 meters. For comparison, the height of the Motherland Monument in Kyiv is one meter shorter. The diver surpassed the previous record held by Natalia Zharkova (102 m).
In the "free immersion by rope" discipline, Sadurska dove to 95 meters. This result was enough to win the gold medal in the competition. The Ukrainian diver secured the highest award at the World Championships for the third consecutive time.
"My main task at this competition is to represent Ukraine with dignity. It’s an opportunity to remind the world that the war in our country continues and that we are ready to fight, but we need support. The second, no less important part of my mission is to remind Ukrainians that we are an incredible nation with immense potential and we have something to show the world," Sadurska said.
Earlier, Hungarian Kristóf Rasovszky triumphed in the marathon swimming event at the 2024 Olympics.
