US President Donald Trump announced that he has achieved a ceasefire between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Rwanda, according to his statement on the social media platform Truth Social.

“I am very happy to report that I have arranged, along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a wonderful Treaty between the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Republic of Rwanda, in their War, which was known for violent bloodshed and death, more so even than most other Wars, and has gone on for decades,” he said.

The American leader confirmed that the peace agreement signing will take place in Washington next week. Trump called it a great day for Africa and the entire world.

“I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for this, I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for stopping the War between India and Pakistan, I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for stopping the War between Serbia and Kosovo, I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for keeping Peace between Egypt and Ethiopia, and I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for doing the Abraham Accords in the Middle East, and I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for doing the Abraham Accords in the Middle East,” he concluded.

Congo-Rwanda war

The conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda lasted over 30 years. Since 2012, the rebel group March 23 Movement (M23), active in North Kivu province, has engaged in intense fighting against government forces.

This led to the massive displacement of civilians from the conflict-affected areas.

In 2022, the DRC government accused the Rwandan Armed Forces of supporting M23. In the summer of 2023, Rwandan troops were recorded crossing into Congo, leading to clashes with border units.

In January 2025, the M23 movement, backed by Rwanda, captured the city of Goma and continued expanding its controlled territory.

In June, the US State Department announced that after three days of negotiations in Washington, a deal was reached to end the war that claimed thousands of lives. The US acted as mediator, with Qatar serving as an observer.
