The season of runny noses, sore throats, and coughs is picking up again. But instead of expensive medications, the solution may be hiding in your kitchen cabinet and cost less than a cup of coffee.

Daily Express shares how to make a drink that eases colds.

What you need to know about colds

British herbal medicine expert Simon Mills shared his home remedy on The Diary of a CEO podcast with Steve Bartlett. According to him, antibiotics do not work for colds or flu because these are viral infections.

According to the NHS, adults get colds 2–3 times a year, and children even more often. Symptoms include a runny or blocked nose, sore throat, cough, and low-grade fever. They usually pass within 1–2 weeks.

How to make the drink

The recipe is simple: ginger, cinnamon, and boiling water.

The doctor recommends grating a piece of fresh ginger (about the size of a large thumb) into a cup, adding a teaspoon of cinnamon, and pouring in boiling water.

Hot ginger stimulates pain receptors, causing blood vessels to dilate (hyperemia) and helping to thin mucus in the respiratory tract. Research published in the journal Nutrients confirms that ginger contains bioactive compounds, including gingerol, which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Cinnamon is also known for its beneficial effects. According to a study in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, it demonstrates antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects in lab conditions, although further clinical research is needed.

The doctor emphasizes that the heat of the drink helps activate the lungs’ natural cleansing mechanism, making mucus thinner and easier to expel.

Although there is no magic pill for colds, experts note that warm drinks can indeed relieve symptoms and reduce congestion.

Ginger with cinnamon will not replace rest and plenty of fluids, but they can make cold days much more comfortable.
