A number of factors can cause hair loss, but there are also many myths and misconceptions about why this happens, according to Daily Express.

Myths about hair loss

Dr. Donald Grant, a general practitioner, has decided to dispel three of the biggest myths about hair loss once and for all—ranging from the causes of your hair loss to the stigma and remedies for both men and women.

Hair loss affects only men

This is not true. Women can also experience hair loss, sometimes even temporarily due to hormonal changes such as pregnancy and menopause. This is because elevated levels of progesterone can cause a temporary halt in the activity of hair follicles, while female pattern baldness is a genetic form of permanent hair loss.

Stress is the cause of hair loss

This statement is incorrect. Although stress can impact hair loss, it is just one of many factors that can contribute to it. Conditions like alopecia areata and telogen effluvium, which cause hair loss, can be influenced by high levels of stress and our mental well-being. However, it is not true that hair loss is solely due to stress.

Various lifestyle and health factors, including diet, iron or vitamin D deficiency, and age, play a significant role in non-genetic hair loss.

Hair loss depends on age

This statement is simply not true, as hair loss can occur at any age, for both men and women.

Androgenetic alopecia is usually genetically inherited and can begin as early as adolescence or in the early twenties.

The doctor explained that hair loss often begins with receding hairlines and then progresses to the rest of the scalp. He emphasized that both men and women should be aware that hair loss can occur at any age and should recognize the characteristic signs.
