Adults often experience hair loss, but do all the advertised hair growth products really work?
Huffpost explains what truly helps maintain hair density and what turns out to be a waste of money.
Why hair may not be as thick as you want
Trichologist Kate Holden explained that hair condition is influenced by factors such as genetics, hormonal changes, nutrient deficiencies, illnesses, medications, or stress.
Stress can have a major impact on hair, both through physical stressors like illness and weight loss, and emotional stressors.
Harsh styling, tight hairstyles, and chemical treatments can also weaken the hair shaft over time and make hair thinner.
How hair growth and thickness products work
Some products aim to make hair appear thicker instantly. These include volumizing shampoos, sprays, and mousses that coat each strand, slightly swell the cuticle, and add volume using styling polymers.
There are also products with hair fibers or concealers that cling to hair for instant volume. However, these are temporary solutions that last only until the next wash.
It’s important to note that serums, even those claiming to promote hair growth, are classified as cosmetics, not medicines. This means their claimed effectiveness is not rigorously tested, and they are often ineffective.
Even if products don’t work as advertised, most cosmetic serums are unlikely to harm hair or scalp.
However, some natural ingredients, such as rosemary or peppermint, can trigger allergic reactions.
Should you take hair vitamins?
Before buying expensive supplements, it’s important to know what your body actually needs. If there are no deficiencies and you maintain a healthy diet, supplements may not be necessary.
Hair vitamins and supplements can benefit many people by improving hair and scalp condition. However, they won’t work for everyone.
People experiencing hair loss due to genetics, hormonal imbalance, or stress are unlikely to benefit from vitamins.
