'Disaster for Ukraine': EU panics over Vance's candidacy for vice president
Concerns are growing in Europe about Donald Trump's second presidential term and its impact on US foreign policy. The appointment of Ohio Senator J.D. Vance to the campaign team has only intensified doubts about the potential new administration's commitment to Ukraine and NATO, citing Politico.
"This is a disaster for Ukraine," said one high-ranking EU official after Trump announced Vance as his candidate for US Vice President.
Vance's attitude towards Ukraine is ambiguous. In 2022, he expressed indifference to its fate, stating in an interview, "I got to be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another."
However, in February 2024, during his first speech at the Munich Security Conference, Vance called for a review of American support for Ukraine and skipped a meeting with the Ukrainian delegation and other senators.
Recently, the senator's rhetoric has become harsher. The 39-year-old politician condemns Europe's reliance on the US for military spending. In particular, he criticizes Germany for not reaching NATO's target of 2% of GDP on defense spending.
Trump's vice presidential candidate
On July 15, Trump secured enough Republican votes to become the party's presidential candidate.
He also announced his candidate for US Vice President, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance.
More details about Vance can be found in the RBC-Ukraine report.
