Chinese company Infinix has developed chameleon smartphones capable of changing colors without consuming energy, thanks to a display with the unique E-Color Shift technology.

Sources used in preparing the material include The Verge, Gadgets360, and Infinix.

About the new technology

The E-Color Shift technology was presented at the CES 2024 international consumer electronics exhibition, which kicked off on January 9, 2024, in Las Vegas, USA.

It is based on "electronic blinds" called E-Ink Prism and allows the back panels of smartphones to change and maintain vibrant colors without consuming energy.

According to developers, energy is only consumed at the moment of changing the color of "electronic inks," after which the technology does not affect the device's autonomy.

Essentially, additional screens resembling electronic book displays are installed on the back of the smartphones presented by the company.

They consist of 60 separate elements, each of which can change the shade depending on the time or user's mood.

How E-Color Shift works

Thanks to the E-Color Shift technology, users can:

  • Change the color of gadgets to any available option (blue, green, yellow, red, etc.).
  • Mix colors, creating their own unique design.
  • Display the time, emojis (ideograms or smileys), or some widgets.

Infinix Mobility Deputy General Director Liang Zhang says that this approach allows users to express their individuality and demonstrate it through the unique design of the phone, going beyond basic color changes. And this gives a device a distinctive look and feel.

The release date of Infinix's chameleon smartphones is currently unknown.
